If you are intrigued by art and happen to be in Holland this winter, then take some time to check out this and kill two birds with one stone.
Take any train to Rotterdam and head directly to the Museumpark, which is only half an hour’s walk from the train station.
Keith Haring
Your first stop is the Kunsthal, for ‘The Political Line’, an exhibition on the works and life of Keith Haring. As soon as you enter, take a seat and enjoy the documentary on how he started as an artist (by the way, his first expo ever was in Rotterdam), how he had to make the transition to be able to live of his work, and how he kept on ‘spreading’ his creativity all over the world. I’m sure you will be touched by the intensity of his love life, and moved by his courage as an AIDS-victim.
Then it’s time to visit the expo, showing 120 works covering his career as an artist. Now you know the story of his life, the meaning of his work will be even more clear to you.
From Bosch till Bruegel
Afterwards, cross the Museumpark, scattered with statues and sculptures, to the Museum Boijmans – Van Beuningen.
By entering the exhibition building, you also enter the 16th century, where you can discover drawings, engravings, paintings and etches from Bosch till Bruegel. You will notice that not only Keith Haring in the 20st century lived on the wild side, the generation of the 16th century was just as much into the groove. A couple of works are exclusively to be seen during this expo, since they are privately owned. At the same time, you can discover the on-going restauration process of ‘St Christopher’, the only original Bosch-painting owned by this museum, and hear restorers explain about their way of work.
Hungry by now?
The pavilion in the museum, bathing in light, offers a great day lunch (a nice little soup and sandwich) for a reasonable price.
Once you’ve got your batteries recharged, enjoy the time left to explore the impressive permanent collection of the museum.
And don’t worry if you can’t make it all until closing time: missing the last hall of a permanent collection is also my perfect excuse to return to Rotterdam later!
Love,
Els
